I know this is a natural health blog, but with the elections just around the corner, I couldn’t help it! Plus, you’ll see, politics and health freedom go hand in hand.
Health freedom refers to our freedom to use whatever medicinal products or interventions that we choose- whether they be natural, holistic treatments, or conventional treatments such as prescription drugs.
However, since pharmaceuticals are not being attacked by government, the health freedom movement is primarily made up of people and organizations that have a preference for alternative medicine. When an individual, or organization refers to ”health freedom” they are usually advocating for greater availability and decreased regulation of alternative/natural remedies.
One of the barriers to holistic treatment stems from the fact that Naturopathic Doctors are often not covered by insurance. NDs are medical doctors who use natural, holistic treatments before resorting to drugs and surgery. In the long run, treatments by an ND are more cost effective than treatment you will receive by an Medical Doctor (MD), yet insurance does not cover their services. Also, it seems most regular MDs are controlled by big pharmaceutical companies and insurance providers. This is part of the reason why many people are naive about the effectiveness of natural medicine.
But here’s what I think are the main threats to health freedom today: the FDA, Codex Alimentarius, mandatory vaccination, and genetically modified foods.
The FDA is constantly fighting the use of natural supplements. Take Stevia for example. It’s natural. It’s everywhere… now. But for the longest time, the FDA would not allow its use as a sweetener, while at the same time approving artificial chemical concoctions like aspartame or saccharin right away. When you follow the money trail you see that artificial sweetener lobbyists hold a lot of power in government and that explains why Stevia was blocked for so long.
Also, have you noticed that whenever you pick up a bottle of supplements at a health food store, there is a label on it that says “These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA” and “not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.” This is a method of scaring people away from natural treatments. In fact, even if a product has been shown through scientific research to treat a particular disease, it cannot be labeled as such if it has not been included in FDA approved clinical trials. The only issue is that, the FDA does not usually approve studies on natural treatments. Go figure. Basically, the FDA is not interested in promoting natural remedies because nature cannot be patented. And patents are crucial if you want to make billions of dollars off of something.
Something else that’s really annoying about the FDA is that they have a habit of harassing the little guys- like farmers who sell… da da done!… raw milk.
I could go on and on about the corruption in the FDA, but in a nutshell, the FDA approves of toxic drugs and chemicals, dangerous food additives, and GMOs- without proper safety testing and the conflict of interest that exists within the FDA is astounding. What do you expect though, when employees from private pharmaceutical research and lobbying firms are allowed to work for the FDA?
The Codex Alimentarius, or “the food code” was established by the World Trade Organization and the Food and Agricultural Organization in 1963 to control the international trade of food. Essentially, the Codex is a set of guidelines for nutritional supplements, food handling, production, and trade. But here’s the thing: the leaders of Codex get their info and guidelines directly from the largest pharmaceutical, chemical, and biotechnology companies of the world. Codex’s motto is, “safe, good food for everyone.” Um… then why does codex promote GMOs!?
I don’t know, maybe Codex started with good intentions- you know, to create standards for sanitation and what not- but again, the conflicts of interest are a huge concern. That’s why when I read on the Codex website that governments should ”take legislative action to ensure that only safe food of acceptable quality is sold” I wonder what they deem to be safe. If they get their guidelines from pharmaceutical, chemical, and biotechnology companies then I can only assume that they will label natural supplements as unsafe. The Codex is over 16,000 pages and I have not read the entire thing, but from what I gather it doesn’t seem to embrace natural health.
Anyway, I don’t believe the Codex is something that is currently enforced in the U.S., but it’s definitely something to watch out for as many experts in the natural health community fear that if it is enforced, more restrictions (and possibly bans) will be placed on natural supplements and medicines. And it is a valid concern because certain “guidelines” from Codex have already been translated into law in Europe!
Mandatory vaccination. It is a violation of individual rights to force any kind of medical treatment on anyone. Period. For more info on why I have a problem with vaccines, click here.
Genetically Modified Organisms. I have already written extensively on GMOs. Genetically modified foods pose many health risks and environmental problems. And companies like Monsanto think they have the right to sneak them into our food. Not cool. For more info on GMOs, click here.
So what does this have to do with the 2012 presidential election?
It is my opinion- based on my own research into politics, American and world history- that both candidates represent a false paradigm. What I mean is that, both parties have the same ultimate agenda. This is why, no matter who is elected, things never seem to change. Our politicians never want to discuss the real issues. Sure, they differ on some points which really don’t matter to those at the top (global banking elite). However, certain serious issues are off limits for debate, including the problem with the Federal Reserve acting as an private entity and creating money out of thin air.
With today’s false two party system, voters seem to only have a choice between the Democratic Party or the Republican Party. Yet both parties can only offer their supporters rhetoric. I always find it interesting that some people that are aware of this false paradigm will still vote for one of the two. Instead of just choosing a candidate that they actually believe in, they choose to vote for “the lesser of two evils.” But if that’s the case, you are still choosing evil.
Both parties have ignored the sellout of the American economy to international bankers. Both parties support pre-emptive war actions in violation of International Law, and seem to be ok with expanding the American Empire to the rest of the world (look at all the American bases in other countries). Neither the Republicans or the Democrats are seeking to change our profit-based, monopolized, healthcare system. Members of both parties voted for a 700 billion dollar Wall Street bailout. I’m sorry to say this, but the dollar’s demise is inevitable if we continue our current monetary system. And neither Barack or Mitt are talking about this. And, of course, neither one of them are addressing the corruption within the FDA. Both of them will continue to allow the FDA to censor truthful statements about medicinal herbs and nutritional supplements.
So… which candidate is more likely to encroach on your health freedoms? Obama or Romney? The answer is: it doesn’t matter! Both of these dudes are puppets of powerful international bankers. They answer to corporations. Not you and me. There was only one candidate who addressed FDA corruption (and the other issues mentioned above!). And he’s out of the race.
Regarding Obama and Romney: in the short-term some things may change depending on which candidate wins. But in the long-run, there is no difference between Romney and Obama.
Here’s an interesting article on “Obamney” (click here).
Anyway, I am not saying that you should not vote. And of course, do your own research. But what you do need to know is that there is much more accountability at the local level. And this is why it is so important to vote in local and state-wide elections. And regarding health freedom, this is why it is so important to vote YES on prop 37 if you live in California. This is a huge step towards health freedom! We deserve the right to know whether or not the food we are eating has been genetically modified. If you are not aware of the dangers of GMOs, click here.
We do not have to sit back and let Monsanto and company destroy our food and ultimately our health. We can choose to support organic farmers and ethical companies. And we can vote YES on prop 37.
Change starts with you and me.
